The goals of GRoWES include:

  • improving our basic understanding of the relationship between stunting and water, sanitation and hygiene (WaSH);
  • eliminating stunting as study sites through targeted interventions;
  • replicating and scaling-up sustainable solutions to stunting; and
  • influencing global policy on nutrition.

The policy implications of GRoWES have been incorporated into the Rome Declaration on Nutrition endorsed by the Second International Conference on Nutrition co-hosted by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Health Organization in 2014, including:

  • Paragraph 5c. “… recognize … malnutrition is often aggravated by … poor sanitation and hygiene, lack of access to … quality health systems and safe drinking water … ingestion of harmful levels of contaminants …”
  • Paragraph 13c. “… promote … special attention should be given to the first 1,000 days …”
  • Paragraph 15g. “.. commit … in particular during the first 1,000 days …”
